A draft law on safeguarding national security in Hong Kong, after months of unrest in the semiautonomous territory, was submitted to China's top legislature for deliberation Thursday, state media Xinhua News Agency reported.
Critics and some foreign countries have voiced concern over the legislation, saying China would be breaking its promise to allow the former British colony to retain the rights and freedoms for 50 years since its handover to Chinese rule in 1997. Details of the legislation are not yet clear, but in the resolution passed last month, one of the offenses, "foreign interference in Hong Kong affairs," was changed to "collusion with foreign forces" in the draft bill.
A media poll conducted by the Hong Kong Journalists Association found 98 percent of members surveyed disagreed with the legislation, for fear that erosion of press freedom will further deteriorate. Michael Tien, a Hong Kong delegate to China's parliament, said it would normally take three meetings before being passed, which would be by the end of year.
