Police are calling for help to track down the person who attempted to sabotage the famous Melbourne Cup - just hours before the race was due to start. 9News

Offenders broke onto Flemington Racecourse and pumped what appeared to be an oily substance across part of the racetrack about 6am on November 1, just hours before racing was due to start.

They also shared a statement claiming they "pumped 1000 litres of an oily substance onto Flemington Racecourse" to protest against the Melbourne Cup, identifying themselves as a problem gambler.
