THREE government agencies on Monday signed an agreement with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) of the Alliance of Bioversity International to provide satellite-based crop insurance and weather-informed agro-advisory services for farmers.

Officials from the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp.

Agricultural losses caused by disasters amounted to P57.8 billion in 2024, according to the Department of Agriculture . These included damages from droughts, floods, volcanic eruptions, pests, and diseases. While crop insurance is seen to lessen the impact of disasters, IRRI said there are instances when traditional crop insurance was unable to fully address the needs of farmers, discouraging them from availing crop insurance.
