Creating a safer environment for the community, especially one for children, has always been Dr Chan Yoke Fun’s priority.
Besides conducting research on a multitude of infectious diseases, the Department of Medical Microbiology head from Universiti Malaya Faculty of Medicine wanted to use her knowledge of science to make the world a better place.
“Despite it being a preventable disease, HFMD is still the second most common infectious disease in Malaysia,” said Chan who has also conducted research on Zika and Covid-19, among a multitude of other infectious diseases, to understand the transmission of these viruses in the country. The proud mother shared that she wrote the script for her presentation video with her 13-year-old daughter who also did the voice over.“The competition was very steep and quite stressful because we were competing against Singapore, which has won before.
“This award has provided recognition and awareness that Malaysia has very capable talents. It was an opportunity for me to represent my fellow scientists. Besides research, Chan, who received an award of US$20,000 , has also worked with local experts to raise awareness about the dangers and prevention of the virus in the community and beyond.
