A local elementary school student was hit by a vehicle in the east-end while attempting to board a school bus that had not activated its upper red lights on Tuesday

No charges have been laid after an elementary school student was hit by a vehicle while attempting to board a school bus in the city’s east-end Tuesday morning.

“The driver of the car was not charged as it was determined that the school bus’s amber lights were flashing, which does not instruct motorists to stop,” Louttit told SooToday. “That is the same as a traffic light – it’s a warning that a bus will be coming to a stop.”Louttit wants to remind motorists to be cautious of the amber lights activation system on the school buses – a new addition that was made to the fleet just prior to the 2022-23 school season in Sault Ste. Marie.

“Vehicles, including cyclists, can continue moving on the roadways when those upper red lights stop flashing and/or the bus begins to move.” “Maybe it’s new here, but I’ve lived in other provinces, and usually when their amber lights are on, you’re stopping,” she says. “Be cautious of your surroundings, especially when children are around in subdivisions.”
