MANILA, Philippines — Filipino weightlifter Vanessa Sarno lamented the alleged toxic environment she went through and the negligence of her mental health by the people around her in her buildup for the Paris Olympics.
Sarno , a 2-time Southeast Asian Games champ and a 1-time Asian Championships titlist, made her feelings known after having registered a DNF in her Olympic debut at the Paris Games women's 71kg class early Saturday, August 10 .In three attempts, the 20-year-old could not lift her declared starting weight of 100kg in snatch, a letdown considering her personal best, which also stands as the national record, is 110kg.
With that, Sarno, who once thought of quitting her Paris bid because of the alleged toxic environment, decided to go straight to the Philippine Olympic Committee and the organization headed by Tagaytay Mayor Abraham 'Bambol' Tolentino approved Sarno's request through an executive decision.'I had long requested for coach Pep to handle me but they disapproved,' said Sarno. 'I explained to them why I want him as my coach.
