San Miguel Foods Inc. (SMFI) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) are joining forces in a nationwide initiative designed to enhance farmers' incomes, bolster food security , and ensure access to quality food for more Filipinos. The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding for a public-private partnership (PPP), will see SMFI establish and manage buying stations for key crops like corn, cassava, sorghum, and soybeans.
This direct connection to institutional buyers promises significant benefits for farmers. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the far-reaching impact of this collaboration, stating, 'This partnership will not only benefit the farmers, but also the broader society as a whole.' He explained, 'By sourcing quality local ingredients for feed production, we can significantly reduce import costs, which will in turn lower prices of meat in the market, eggs, and several other (products) for consumers.' The initiative also seeks to modernize and streamline agricultural supply chains across the nation, fostering long-term growth and sustainability in the sector.Ramon Ang, chairman of SMFI parent company San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc. (SMFB), expressed his confidence in the partnership's potential, saying, 'This partnership allows us to invest directly in our farmers and the future of Philippine agriculture.' He added, 'By offering fair prices and consistent support, we help farmers improve their livelihoods and make agriculture a more sustainable and rewarding industry.' SMFI will further contribute by sharing laboratory procedures for crop acceptance and conducting capacity-building seminars for DA-recognized farmer cooperatives and associations (FCAs). They will also offer food products to cooperatives for supplementary income. The DA, in turn, will introduce advanced technologies to enhance crop monitoring and harvest volume projections. They will also provide technical assistance to SMFI's farmer partners, particularly those affiliated with DA-recognized FCAs. The department has pledged to deliver quality training, support SMFI's information campaigns for direct buying and community reseller programs, and grant access to select research stations for varietal preservation and planting material development. On Friday, SMFB shares experienced a decrease of 75 centavos, or 1.47 percent, settling at P50.25 apiece.
