Residents of Salem Loop were disappointed to learn that a water and sewer project for their area was denied funding by the province. - Adam MacInnisIt has an elementary and a high school nearby; it’s a short drive to all the towns in Pictou County; and it has easy access to the highway.“Talk to anyone in Salem and they’ll tell you there is no good water,” Municipality of Pictou County Warden Robert Parker said. “You can drill 10 wells in one property and you’ll still not get good water.

But that didn’t happen. Instead, three weeks ago, the county found out that the project had been denied funding by the province. He admits it’s high, but argues that it’s not just about the houses currently in the area, but the development that will happen if the project goes ahead. “The government has a responsibility to make fiscally responsible decisions with taxpayers’ dollars,” she said. “From our ICIP call for Water and Wastewater project applications, we received more requests for funding than program dollars available. This project was considered along with all the other applications submitted.

Parker noted that they’ve already spent considerable money on getting the design work done and putting in water would address the primary concern residents have.
