The Armed Forces of the Philippines confirmed the sighting of a Russian submarine in Philippine waters on November 28. Located 80 nautical miles west of Cape Calavite, the submarine was identified as UFA 490 and was awaiting improved weather conditions before heading to Vladivostok.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines confirmed on Monday the sighting of a Russian submarine in the Philippines.
The AFP reported that the Navy’s BRP Jose Rizal established radio communications with the submarine, which confirmed its identity, crew complement, and navigational intent. Philippine naval forces, including FF150, escorted and monitored operations to ensure the submarine’s compliance with maritime regulations within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone .
The Russian vessel did not submerge as it moved slowly northward outside of the country’s territorial waters until the weekend. Throughout its passage, UFA was under close observation by the Philippine Navy’s BRP Jose Rizal.
