The killing of 89 conscripted Russian soldiers has sparked outrage in the country, after military officials suggested the servicemen were to blame for their own deaths.
President Putin had just thanked “every participant in the special military operation” for their role in the “struggle for our country” when four Ukrainian missiles hit a soldiers’ quarters in the city of Makiivka.
The soldiers were allegedly being housed next to an ammunition dump, which was reduced to rubble in the attack. “It is easier to blame everything on our soldiers than to admit incompetence among our commanders. I didn’t expect anything else,” said Maksim, the brother of a soldier injured in the attack. Many of the conscripts were from the south-western region of Samara, where mourners have come together in the wake of the attack to express their grief and anger.Several relatives have also claimed Russia is yet to publish the names of all those who died in the attack.
