The Ukrainian Ambassador has called on Australian Open organisers to send a “strong message” to the Kremlin by banning Russian players from the Grand Slam tournament.

“That’s one of the reasons why we see how much Russia has invested in their athletes for the Olympics when they were doping them on a massive scale and then Russia was eventually fined for that. Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley confirmed the move in October 2022, saying players from Russia and Belarus were “welcome” at the tournament.

British tennis competition Wimbledon dismissed this ruling and banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing in last July’s tournament.“Doesn’t matter what flag they’re under, it’s a flag which is tainted in Ukrainian blood,” Mr Myroshnychenko told Sky News Australia on Tuesday.
