Vice President Leni Robredo on Wednesday recommended the tweaking of the engineering design of Ivatan houses to withstand powerful earthquakes.
Robredo stressed this after visiting Itbayat, Batanes, to distribute relief goods to affected residents in the aftermath of earthquakes that hit the province.
“It is needed to tweak the engineering design. Because the structures have no steel rods, they are all made of stones,” Robredo said in Filipino. The two villages in Itbayat were the hardest hit by the earthquake, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council . “Siguro sa lalong madaling panahon, iyong pinaka-mahalaga, maka-build na ng temporary shelters. Na-figure out na din ng provincial government kung paano iyong gagawin. Iyon iyong umpisa ,” she said.
Among the assistance, they turned over were food packs, water, medicines, and sleeping mats. These items were donated by the Church of the Latter-Day Saints, Amir Abad, and Friends of Itbayat, Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation, and Manila Water Foundation.
