SA's State Emergency Service says the volume of water along the River Murray has been 'a bit of a surprise' and is advising Mannum locals to ready themselves for further advice messages in the next 24 hours.
abc.net.au/news/river-murray-flood-emergency-warnings-forecast/101774260River Murray communities are on tenterhooks as the zone of potential impact from flooding continues to spread downstream, with authorities flagging the possibility of more warnings for Mannum.
"In my property, it was halfway up my backyard … I live on a road that's only got one entrance so it came across the causeway," she told ABC Radio Adelaide."I pretty well prepared earlier, we knew it was happening … I wanted to stay as long as I could."SES regional commander Leanne Schmidt said a community meeting was held at Murray Bridge last night, and that the speed of the water level rises meant Mannum could be impacted sooner than initially thought.
"Fortunately we had already done doorknocking down that space, so we were pretty aware of who was and wasn't in those locations, so it turns out there were only two people in that space. "There's been a watch and act message issued for a number of communities … and there will be more being issued over time, probably to include Mannum tonight potentially or today," Ms Schmidt told ABC Radio."We don't have any particular concerns but we just need to make sure people are ready."Mid Murray Council mayor Simone Bailey said 250 kilometres of roads in her council area were expected to be impacted by floodwaters.
"We've done all the preparation that we reasonably can but … there is clearly a degree of anxiety on the ground about the fact that there are people who are going to be affected by this, notwithstanding the [Mannum] levee works," he said.
