Joe, born in 1932 and died in 2007, published her first collection of poetry in 1978 before going on to publish six more works and earn many honours. Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage Minister Pat Dunn also announced the next four annual honourees. Following Joe, the next four honourees will be William Hall in 2024, Nora Bernard in 2025, J. William Comeau in 2026 and Carrie Best in 2027.
These are the last of the 12 nominees selected by a three-member panel to follow the first Nova Scotian honoured, Viola Desmond, who challenged segregation practices in the province.It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
