“There have been hundreds of other players who won a provincial title but it just so happens that it was the three of us who made it to the draft,” said John, a linebacker who was selected by the Ottawa Redblacks with the first pick of the third round, 19th overall.
The six-foot-four, 248-pound John collected 27 solo tackles in seven games to lead the Saint Mary’s Huskies last Atlantic university season. He reportedly turned heads at the CFL Combine where he had a 35-inch vertical leap and displayed an explosiveness that could prove integral as a pass rusher in the CFL.
Grant, an offensive lineman with the Queen’s Gaels who’s a year younger than John and States-McClean, was taken by the Montreal Alouettes in the fourth round, 32nd overall of the CFL draft. “I knew there were ballers at SMU,” John said. “The talent is there. Guys like Markcus, Jassin are all athletes at the top level. I’m so glad we were able to go out and prove it.”
“It gives the program hope,” John continued. “I see it just in the past two days after the draft. Going into the locker room and talking to the younger guys, showing them it’s possible you can make it to the pros from Halifax. Everyone on the team saw the work that went into it – the two-a-days, all of the extra hours of work. They have seen the pay off and that it’s a possibility.”
