Above-normal season temperatures have left the world’s largest skateway unusable so far this winter. It is the first time since 1971 that it has not yet been open for the season. In a four-year partnership with the NCC, Carleton University researchers have been studying ways to help promote and sustain early ice build-up to navigate the effects of climate change.
Typically, the canal skating season runs from some time in January to early March. Preparations begin in mid-October when the canal is drained. NCC maintenance crews wait until the water has reached 2 C and the first ice layer begins to form. Depending on the year, this can occur around mid-December.
