Review: Song, dance and drama make for superb choral concert yyc yycmusic
Eric Whitacre’s well-known choral composition Sleep was followed by a remarkable reworking of the same piece by the young German composer Dominik Dieterle that overlaid the choral score with a taped electronic accompaniment that also was supported by a striking visual component. All these subtle connections made for a fascinating and engaging program.
The wider significance of Noble’s piece was musically summarized and crystalized by the performance of Robin Salkeld’s arrangement of Vienna Teng’s Hymn of Acxiom, sung on this occasion not only by Luminous Voices but by several invited high school choirs, whose members were located in the audience. Singing from their cellphones, and with light only from the phones, the entire effect was stirring, both by the presence of the massed choral sound and for the poetic qualities of the text.
This core element was overlaid by an obbligato of emotionally rich arabesques by the solo cellist, wonderfully played by Beth Root-Sandvoss, and further enriched by the dancing of Tara Campbell. Campbell’s lithe, sinuous dancing and choreography markedly enhanced the emotional impact of the choral score, with its gradual progression from darkness to light. She is certainly an impressive dancer and more than deserved her extra solo bow at the end.
