Guitarist Lionel Loueke played with the legendary jazz musician Herbie Hancock at the 2023 Ottawa Jazz Festival’s closing-night concert in downtown Ottawa Friday night.James Genus’s electric bass was the music’s bubbling bedrock while drummer Jaylen Petinaud filled the park with slamming grooves. But even if what Hancock played could keep music-student analysts busy for days, when he took to the mic, he was quipping and expounding to keep the crowd engaged. He let the audience know in passing that he was vegan and that he and some of the musicians on stage were practitioners of Soka Gakkai International Buddhism.
After Footprints, Hancock and company explored all the nooks of crannies of Actual Proof and Come Running To Me. The former, a stops-out instrumental funk anthem from the mid-1970s, was enlivened by a star turn by Genus. The latter, a disco-y 1978 hit, featured Hancock’s vocoder-y vocals, especially during his improvised cadenza chockful of gorgeous harmonies.Article content
