Sky News Australia Wine and Travel Editor Des Houghton visited The Rocks in Sydney to discover how wine-lovers are making the most of bargain buys courtesy of one of Australia's most iconic vineyards.
I was at The Rocks in Sydney searching for the Château Tanunda’s new city cellar door when I came upon the glorious Soldier of Fortune, Sydney’s oldest pub, circa 1828.
It’s become a major tourist attraction where visitors may taste wine from old vines 150, 100 or 50 years old. Château Tanunda, 71km northeast of Adelaide, was rescued by John Geber, a South African-born lawyer turned tea tycoon, who purchased the tumble-down estate in 1998. It is an addition to De Bortoli’s Woodfired range made from fruit sourced from the family’s vineyards in Heathcote in Victoria.
“There is a resurgence of woodfired oven cuisine and charcoal cooking in Australia and we are making wines to match.” Family-run Tahbilk in Victoria is the source of several bottles that wont stretch the budget too far. Try Tahbilk Marsanne 2013 Vintage for $18.Try MadFish Gold Turtle Rose or MadFish Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot and chardonnay and prosecco offerings often below the $17 mark.
