The flood-hit community of Echuca has built up a levee bank to try and protect the town, but some residents say they're on the wrong side, meaning their home will likely go under when the Murray River peaks later this week. 9News
"There's probably about 30 or 40 of us I suppose – houses – there's another street behind us, they've flooded down on the corner already," John toldJohn and Erin said they've done what they can to help protect their home by sandbagging three or four bags high and using 15 metres of sand around their perimeter.Echuca in Victoria's north has built up a levee bank to try and protect the town.
"No point going any higher because if we had to go any higher it'd have to be above the height of the levee," Erin said.While the water isn't expected to hit for another couple of days, John said they've already begun to move their electrical goods and other belongings are sitting on trestles.However, John said he and others on his side of the levee shouldn't be in this situation at all.
John McCann and Erin said they've done what they can to help protect their home by sandbagging three or four bags high and using 15 metres of sand around their perimeter. "They had a levee bank up at the front as well and they've had all that time, like nearly 30 years … to build some flood defences … and they haven't lifted a finger," John said.
John, who has been a local resident for 64 years, said he's never seen so many sandbags in town before a flood.
