Resetting language learning at DepEd

A NEW law returns the use of Filipino and English as the primary medium of instruction in the first four years of education. This is because implementing the universally accepted use of Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education has proven to be difficult. The former system classified learners based on their mother tongue to systematically determine the existence of monolingual classes each school year. This was done for all students from Grades 1 to 3.

Following the review, the DepEd will submit to the president and to Congress a report that will include recommendations on how to address gaps and challenges. The report will also include whether to continue or discontinue the use of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction in monolingual classes. We take exception to the last point because that discussion on the importance of mother tongue-based education is a ship that has long sailed.
