Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph G. Recto sought on Tuesday a formal inquiry into the African Swine Fever issue with the intent of determining the appropriate government intervention to prevent and control the outbreak of trans-boundary animal diseases in the country.

The local hog-raising industry ranked eighth in the world in terms of volume of pork production in 2018. The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development noted that despite the level of swine production, the local swine industry is still hampered by inefficiencies that could be traced from low sow productivity, inefficient diagnostic tools, and lack of native pig genetic resource conservation, improvement and utilization initiatives.

Recto emphasized that the ASF is a contagious disease brought by a resilient virus that induces hemorrhagic fever on domestic and wild pigs, causing death to as much as 100 percent of all affected livestock. Recto said that ASF can cause serious economic losses, stemming not only from eight the actual death of livestock, but also from the public and private cost of controlling the spread of the disease and the imposition of restrictions on transport, trade, importation and exportation of pork and other swine products.

The Department of Agriculture has issued several memorandum orders instituting measures to prevent the onset of ASF in the country.
