A CONTINUED Bureau of Internal Revenue crackdown against illicit cigarette manufacturers has uncovered an estimated P8.54 billion in tax liabilities, the agency said on Thursday Raids conducted at a factory in Bulacan and three warehouses in Valenzuela City last week were the biggest so far this year, BIR chief Romeo Lumagui Jr. said.The targeted facilities are believed to be part of a single and extensive criminal enterprise, he added.
Cigarette-making machines and packaging equipment were also seized, while six Chinese were arrested.Multiple sections of the National Internal Revenue Code were said to have been violated, including Section 236 in relation to Section 258, which pertains to the unlawful pursuit of business, and Section 263, which addresses the possession or removal of excise-taxable goods without proper tax payments.
