Quezon City, Philippines, embarks on a green initiative by introducing eight electric buses on Route 1, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has taken a significant step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions by piloting the operation of eight electric buses along Route 1, which runs from Quezon City Hall to Cubao and back. The official roll-out of our electric QCity buses solidifies our commitment and dedication to environmental sustainability by transitioning to reusable energy,” Belmonte said, emphasizing the city government’s dedication to eco-friendly programs and policies.

The initiative supports the city’s Enhanced Local Climate Change Action Plan (2021–2050) and complies with Republic Act 11697, or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, which mandates that at least five percent of government-owned or leased vehicles be electric. Each QCity electric bus has a seating capacity of 41 passengers, with additional standing room, ensuring accessibility and safety for all commuters. The buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps, handrails, fire suppression systems, emergency equipment, CCTV cameras, and smart televisions to enhance passenger convenience. Belmonte reiterated her administration’s commitment to achieving a 30 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, stating that projects like the QCity electric buses are crucial for building a more sustainable future for Quezon City
