Officials at Queen’s Park say they have inked a four-year funding agreement with the Ontario Association of Optometrists , which includes changes to eligibility.
Exams for seniors without an eligible medical condition will drop from every 12 months to every 18 months. Those with conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetes will continue to receive exams every year. Eye exam coverage will be dialled back for people with cataracts, and limited to those with clinically-significant deceased vision or referrals for surgeries.The relationship between Queen’s Park and the OAO has been stressed at times.in late 2021 over reimbursement concerns.
“The way eye care is delivered has changed over the past decade,” said Health Minister Sylvia Jones. “Together, we were able to come to a long-term and sustainable agreement. Through their OHIP card, people of all ages will continue to be connected to high-quality and publicly-funded eye care that better reflects the latest best practices and expert advice.”“Seniors are having a hard enough time right now without having to go longer between eye exams, which are critical to seniors’ health.
