Vladimir Putin’s speech left “no uncertain terms” on Russia continuing to fight Ukraine, according to ANU Strategic and Defence Studies Centre Fellow Dr Matthew Sussex.

“They’ve managed to get probably another 130,000 troops, most of them conscripts to the frontlines in Ukraine,” he told Sky News Australia.

“That’s basically 80 per cent of Russia’s ground forces, so frankly, if this offensive doesn’t work, it doesn’t manage to capture large amounts of Ukrainian territory, then I think we need to start asking serious questions about how far the Russians can continue with this invasion.”
