The Russian President has appointed a new commander to lead the Ukraine war in a move the defence ministry said would 'increase the level of leadership' and improve the 'effectiveness of the management of forces'.

Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov has been appointed by Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to take over the post and continue the campaign.

It was rumoured that General Sergei Surovikin had been getting too close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. General Surovikin made his name in Russia’s military intervention in the Syrian civil war and was known for orchestrating massive attacks on the city of Aleppo.
