Bosnian Serb separatists have handed the Russian President the highest medal of honour in the land for his efforts to develop cooperation between Russia and the Serb Republic.

President Putin was granted the medal in-absentia by Bosnian Serb separatist leader Milorad Dodik at a Sunday awards ceremony, held the evening before the autonomous republic’s statehood day on Monday.

Picture: AP Photo/Armin Durgut He will receive the medal from Mr Dodik at their next meeting, Russian Ambassador Igor Kalbukhov confirmed. Mr Dodik - who is currently sanctioned by the US - has been vocal about his secessionist aims for the entity to leave Bosnia and Herzegovina and join neighbouring Serbia.

Bosnia and Herzegovina are currently in the midst of accession to the European Union, having been granted candidate status in mid-December of last year.
