THE country’s unmilled rice production declined slightly in the first quarter of 2024, based on the Philippine Statistics Authority’s (PSA) survey of production volume. Data from the PSA showed that palay output in January to March slid by 1.96 percent to 4.69 million metric tons (MMT) from the 4.
Despite the sweltering summer heat, a resident of Barangay Burgos in Pakil, Laguna, checks on a palay farm in Estaca port, ready for harvest in the next three months, embodying hope for a fruitful yield despite challenging conditions.
Data from the PSA showed that palay output in January to March slid by 1.96 percent to 4.69 million metric tons from the 4.78 MMT recorded in the same period in 2023. “It excludes those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of demand, force majeure, or fortuitous events,” PSA said. The production of irrigated farms dipped by 2.34 percent, reaching 3.6 MMT from last year’s 3.69 MMT. Rainfed farms, which depend solely on rainfall, produced 1.086 MMT, slightly lower than the 1.094 MMT recorded in 2023.
Cagayan Valley, another top rice producer, had 754,833 MT or nearly 15 percent higher than last year’s 657,636 MT.
