President Duterte has refused to pick a fight with Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez over the return of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to their hometowns, saying the local official was probably just being vigilant in guarding his area from the coronavirus threat.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte updates the nation on the government’s efforts in addressing the coronavirus disease at the Malago Clubhouse in Malacañang on May 28, 2020.

“But you know there are also constitutional issues that are involved and those are sacred ones. For those who are not really pronounced to be infected positive, there’s no reason why you should not accept, especially those who are returning to their homes from doing work abroad,” he said. The President earlier gave labor and health authorities one week to facilitate the return of 24,000 OFWs to their hometowns after they were stuck for a long time at the quarantine sites in Metro Manila. Duterte has authorized agencies to tap funds and all government assets, including airplanes and ships, ferry the OFWs back to their homes.
