Police have confirmed they are "responding to protest activity at a property in Firth Road, Benalla".The ABC understands that police responded after the north-east Victorian abattoir was allegedly broken into in the early hours of this morning. Animal activists from the Farm Transparency Project claim they have stopped operations at the abattoir by chaining themselves onto a gas chamber used to paralyse pigs before processing, a legal and common industry practice.It comes after animal activists last month called for slaughter methods to be changed claiming carbon dioxide gassing was cruel.

A spokesperson for the protesters said 20 people have been escorted from the abattoir this morning, and that at least one person has been arrested.Biosecurity signs at the abattoir.
