Highly trained doctors and nurses at the facility in Sydney's west will provide care to those with diseases so dangerous they're likely to kill more than half of those that contract them.

Emerging from a lift, lying in a sealed coffin-like bed, some of Australia's most infectious patients will be transported into a pressurised room.

"There's no known treatments for them and they spread very easily in the hospital setting to healthcare workers." In charge of the new ward is infectious diseases physician and medical microbiologist, Dr Matthew O'Sullivan.It is also designed to be able to provide care to even the most critically ill people, which sets it apart from existing isolation units at the hospital.

"You know, humans encroaching on jungle areas and diseases jumping from animals into humans that way.
