Praise, caution for Comelec's social media plan
THE Commission on Elections has announced that it will impose strict oversight of campaign-related social media activity during the 2025 midterm election campaign, which is welcome news. The last several election campaigns were plagued by unchecked disinformation and smear tactics on social media platforms, and while preventing that will be a huge and likely exhausting task, it needs to be done, and we are encouraged that Comelec is taking a proactive approach.
In order to carry out this task, Comelec has created a new Cybersecurity and Campaign Monitoring Unit. Garcia also said that Comelec would collaborate with various social media platforms to monitor advertisements and other content related to the elections.
