Thousands of midtown Toronto residents woke up in the dark on Tuesday morning after significant damage to hydro equipment affected power service overnight.

Toronto Hydro said service was interrupted on Monday evening at around 9 p.m. between St. Claire Avenue East and Glencairn Ave. South, from Avenue Road to Mount Pleasant Road.

The service provider said crews were deployed and identified underground equipment “requiring urgent repairs.” “Crews made progress overnight and remain on site making repairs, however, the repairs are complicated and take time to complete safely,” said Toronto Hydro spokesperson Nicole Kubas.Toronto Hydro said power is expected to be restored throughout Tuesday, with some residents getting back their power back by noon.

“The exact estimated time of restoration is difficult to pinpoint at this time due to the complexity of the repair,” Kubas said
