After experiencing two of the darkest days of his life, he had the idea to give out free soup and bagels to thousands of Torontonians on Valentine’s Day. “I knew I had to find the strength to let the sun inside my heart.”

came to Marty Galin after he experienced two of the darkest days of his life.

“For a moment, my world seemed to fall apart,” Galin says, describing how the assailant punched him in the face, smashing his glasses and puncturing his eye. When he screamed for help, the man ran away. “I was really freaked out and shaking. Blood was coming down .” Galin recalls being certain he wasn’t going to make it this time. A doctor assured him otherwise. “I’m not going to let you die,” the doctor told him.

“Both the doctor and the policeman were really positive,” Galin says. “I knew I had to find the strength to let the sun inside my heart.”
