JOHOR BARU: The Federal Government’s decision to continue providing subsidies for chicken and eggs beyond June 30 is a temporary but necessary move, says Hassan Abdul Karim.
The Pasir Gudang MP, who is also a member of the Domestic Trade, Entrepreneurship, Cost of Living and Agriculture special select committee, said the decision to continue the subsidies and control the price of chickens and eggs was a good one and should be supported as it helps to ensure sufficient supply of the items in the market.
"The government realises the need to review the matter when the sector recovers and even cease the subsidies after making sure the chicken and egg suppliers can sell the items at a reasonable price while still making profits. He added that ending the subsidies for chicken and eggs could save the government billions of ringgit each year but it would have to wait until the time was right to do so.
With many consumers fearing that household expenditure would soar if the prices of chicken and eggs were floated, the government then decided to continue with the ceiling price of the two items.
