NSW police are warning of a cruel twist in the infamous "Hi Mum" text scams, which have begun impersonating teenagers getting kidnapped and held for drug money.from an unknown number claiming to be their son or daughter.

However, in a bizarre twist, scammers are now using a drug debt and kidnapping scenario to steal thousands from parents. The new messages include terrifying sentences like "It was drug debt, I'm with them now, they're going to stab me if I don't pay it all back to them" and "I am so scared, I don't know what to do, I have no idea where I am, they have me in the back of a car".

ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard says it's important to be vigilant if you receive a message like this. "It's important to stop and think if you get a message... because chances are it's not your family member or friend – it's a scammer."Over two-thirds of family impersonation scams have targeted women over the age of 55.
