Senior police say before the fatal Wieambilla shooting, Nathaniel Train had only a 2014 driving offence. His brother Gareth had only been subject to a decades-old offence for possessing a firearm with an expired licence.

Queensland police say the brothers involved in last week’s fatal shootout in Wieambilla both had, or previously held, gun permits and one was subject to an outstanding warrant for breaching COVID border controls last December.

“We recognise the events of last week pose significant public and media interest,” she said, while providing a coroner-approved briefing, the most detailed since the shooting last Monday. At least one instance involved police visiting the property — about three hours’ drive west of Brisbane and said to have featured an “advanced surveillance system” — in August this year, but officers were “unable to raise” anyone there.The four officers who arrived around the same time on December 12 would have known he was a registered firearm holder, Linford said.
