The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has appointed key personnel to lead the country's delegations at various international sporting events, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. POC president Abraham 'Bambol' Tolentino emphasized the importance of early preparation for athletes to ensure success in these competitions.
MANILA, Philippines — Ricky Vargas has been appointed as chef de mission for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, while Al Panlilio will lead the Philippine delegation at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. These appointments were made during the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC)'s first General Assembly for the year, held at the East Ocean Seafood Restaurant in Paranaque City on Wednesday. POC president Abraham 'Bambol' Tolentino also announced the appointment of Rep.
Richard Gomez as chef de mission for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, Dr. Jose Raul Canlas for the Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, and Stephen Arapoc for the Chengdu 2025 World Games. 'The objective is to prepare our teams—and athletes—in earnest for the international competitions,' Tolentino said. 'If we prepare early, there will be no excuses.' Richard Lim of karate will be chef de mission for the Asian Winter Games in Harbin, which starts on February 7 and runs until February 14. A chef de mission for the Third Asian Youth Olympics Games in Bahrain from October 22 to 31 has yet to be named. Vargas, a former POC president and current chairman of the boxing federation, Panlilio (basketball), and Gomez (modern pentathlon) are the incumbent first and second vice presidents, respectively, while Canlas (surfing) is the treasurer of the organization. Arapoc heads the wushu association. The SEA Games will be held from December 9 to 20 this year in Chonburi, Songkhla and Bangkok, the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics will take place from February 6 to 22, and the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are scheduled for September 19 to October 4, 2026. The Los Angeles Olympics are slated for July 14 to 30, 2028. Former football president Mariano 'Nonong' Araneta was appointed as chairman of the ethics committee, while Atty. Daniel Hofileña, a non-POC member, will head the arbitration committee. Tolentino said the POC General Assembly also approved a 2025 working budget of P35 million, which is P8 million less than last year's due to preparations and participation in the Paris Olympics.
