The number of kidnapping cases in the country has ballooned to at least 75 cases in the past three years, with the police attributing the sharp increase to casino and Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO)-related abductions involving Chinese victims and kidnappers.
The Anti-Kidnapping Group of the Philippine National Police said recently that this year alone, 42 cases of casino and POGO-related kidnappings were recorded involving 49 victims.
Since 2017 when Chinese gaming investors and workers started flocking to the country, a total of 75 cases were reported. In 2017, there were 17 cases involving 19 victims with 59 suspects arrested. Last year there 16 cases with 17 victims and 17 suspects arrested.Based on AKG data, casino and POGO kidnappings have different motives.
When the victim loses and fails to pay, he is taken to the hideouts of the loan shark syndicates where he is beaten and treated like an animal. Since their passports and other travel documents are controlled by the operators who recruited them, most of them have no choice but to stay.
