Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the federal government will invest $720 million in the upcoming budget in an attempt to rein in spending on the National Disability Insurance Scheme over time.
The prime minister also flagged the introduction of an annual growth target for the scheme of 8 per cent by 2026, in an attempt to put the brakes on further costs into the future. At the moment, the NDIS is expected to cost $97 billion a year within a decade, but if growth is curtailed to 8 per cent it would save the government more than $50 billion.
The figure is a combination of old and new money, and the breakdown of what proportion is new funding will be announced in next month's budget. "I think it's become obvious for quite a while now that one of the key things that we can do to alleviate pressure on public hospitals is to keep people out of public hospitals in the first place," he said.
