Breastfeeding was challenging. She couldn't produce enough milk and took"medications, vitamins and such by the handful," but was left feeling drained. It became a terrifying experience. “I'd reached a point where I was timing my husband’s arrival home so the gap between me being there and alive for my daughter and then my husband being there for her wasn't long,” she says.

Jararuse was given some tools but was soon pushed to do cognitive behavioural therapy , which sounded great, “except for the part that mentioned it'd have to be a group experience. I'm very shy and was sad to miss out on CBT due to my shyness and wanting my issues kept private.” "I couldn't sleep because I was convinced our newborn would just stop breathing, or spit up and choke, while I was asleep. The images of them hurt or worse just kept forcing their way into my mind.”Shoreman sought help and ended up on medication, which helped immensely.“I wasn't taking care of myself and I didn't ever want to leave the house or socialize," she says. All she wanted to do was crawl into bed with her kids and cuddle.

She feels there's still a stigma around taking medication for mental health because “it might ‘dim your sparkle’ or ‘make you into a zombie,’ but I've found the opposite to be true.”“I love my family. I love being engaged with my life, and I'm empowered to do things and get out in the world," she says.
