AMSTERDAM - The already colorful Amsterdam Pride Canal Parade will have an added attraction this year courtesy of the Balangay-inspired boat of Filipino LGBTs in Europe.
For the first time on Saturday, August 3, a Filipino-Asian LGBT group will participate in one of the biggest and most anticipated pride parades in the world.
The event also has the most diverse participants including major political parties, state departments, big businesses, the military, and police. The theme commemorates the Stonewall riots, which broke out in New York 50 years ago and formed a decisive moment in the history of the LGBT movement.According to Chris Sta. Brigada, chair of Filipino LGBT Europe, the balangay represents cultural and historical significance to Filipinos around the world.
The Filipino participants, including their partners, will don traditional costumes representing different tribes and groups in the Philippines.
