The two men killed in a light plane crash in Appin, south-west of Sydney, have been identified. Leigh Cunneen and Steve Donaghue are being remembered this morning, after their kit built plane crashed into bushland on Monday. 9News READ MORE:
Cunneen was an accountant and landlord from Annandale in Sydney's inner west and was well known for his love of aviation. One neighbour, David Gardner, said he saw Cunneen a few days ago."If you wanted something doing he'd do it for you," he said. It's understood the men bought and rebuilt the plane and were on their first official flight.
At 1.15pm Cunneen called his wife, telling her they were flying back and would land at Wedderburn Aerodrome. The investigation will include an examination of the wreckage, assessment of aircraft and pilot records, weather information and any available recorded data, ATSB Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell said.
He said investigators are yet to speak to eyewitnesses but a number of people reportedly saw the plane shortly before the crash, losing sight of it as it disappeared into the trees.Following a search of the area police and ambulance crews found a light plane with two dead aboard.
