Piers Morgan has been one of the harshest critics of Australia following the controversial wicket of Jonny Bairstow, but the British presenter appeared to meet his match in a respected Australian cricket writer.
Australia is 2-0 up in the Ashes but the public discussion has been dominated by the stumping of the England wicketkeeper and the crowd’s behaviour on day five of the second Test.
Morgan, a Sky News Australia host, has been one of England’s fiercest supporters and accused the Australians of being unsportsmanlike and playing outside the “spirit of the game”. “Here we have a chance, three years on, for the Australian team to show that they really have changed their spots and actually do believe in the spirit of the game sometimes overriding the basic laws,” he said.
“Anybody who plays cricket, Piers, knows that the over’s not over until the umpire calls it over and there’s a lot of people making a lot of noise about this and sounding like you,” he said. The incident was slammed as a disgraceful display of unsportsmanlike behaviour and Morgan believed the underarm and Bairstow dismissal were similar instances of Australians playing without the “spirit of cricket”, a comment Lalor strongly denied.“Trevor Chappell’s act was an extraordinary act, I think we all condemn it.”
“Bairstow clearly here scrapes his boot inside the crease… everybody knows what he’s doing there he is saying I’m marking the end of the over and both umpires have moved,” Morgan argued. “I think your country’s kind of lost its mind over this and I think it’s a bit of a smoke screen to be honest you’re 2-nil down in the Ashes.
“It’s been spurred on your team who’s attempting to cover up the fact that it’s 2-0 down in the Ashes.”
