Ziba Mashkori has worked tirelessly to have her photo exhibition on displayFrom Jan. 7 to 14, hundreds of banners and posters will be visible in the square, each with the face of an Iranian civilian who has been killed by the Iranian government during the current wave of protests that broke outMashkori, an Iranian-Canadian, made it her mission to educate people in Nova Scotia about the horrific atrocities occurring in her native country.
"I think it's important for people, even in a small town such as Truro, to realize how dangerous this government is," said Mashkori after her speech."Forgetting about even the human rights part of it, but what effect this government has on your life. You might think, 'it's in the Middle East, it's too far away from me,' but no, it's not."
"We appreciate the Iranian people that live in our community, and what they bring to the fabric of our community, why would we not support them in this cause," said Mills in an interview after the event.Mills also spoke on the importance of getting information out locally on an issue affecting a country on the other side of the globe.
After the event had concluded, Mashkori felt a sense of relief, having finally finished what she hoped to accomplish. Her journey towards having the photo exhibition involved her going to the Town of Truro to get permission for the display, as well as a lofty personal expense to have the photos and banners printed.
