Local hog and poultry production would continue to grow amid threats of diseases as the government claims victory against African swine fever (ASF) and avian influenza (AI), an agriculture official said.

Local hog and poultry production would continue to grow amid threats of diseases as the government claims victory against African swine fever and avian influenza , an agriculture official said.

“Remember, last year we infused an additional budget of about P4 billion to our livestock sector for our fight against ASF. That means we are now winning against ASF and hopefully it continues,” de Mesa added. The chicken meat production, meanwhile, sustained its growth for the second consecutive quarter after it grew 6.9 percent year-on-year in the second quarter. Chicken meat output contracted for every quarter in the past two years from 2020 until 2021.

BAI Assistant Director Jonathan V. Sabiniano said only five regions in the country have active ASF cases. These are the Cordillera Administrative Region, Regions 3, 8, 9 and 12. “Global pork production is projected to increase by 17 percent [18 MT] by 2031, relative to the ASF affected base period 2019-21. The sector is assumed to recover from ASF by 2023, so that almost all of the projected growth will come early in the next decade,” it said.
