The Philippines is importing 4,000 metric tons of red and yellow onions to address a shortage in domestic supply. The imports are expected to last for several weeks and will help to stabilize prices.
The Philippines is set to import approximately 4,000 metric tons of red and yellow onions to address a dwindling domestic supply. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. announced that the Department of Agriculture (DA) will approve the onion imports, emphasizing that these imports are intended to fill the projected gap in local supply for the current month. Laurel stated that the import volume is expected to be around 3,000 MT of red onions and 1,000 MT of white onions.
Data from the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) reveals that as of January 24, the country's red onion inventory stood at 7,281 MT, while yellow onion stocks were estimated at nearly 800 MT. The BPI projects that red onion supplies will last only until this week, while yellow onions have already been depleted since January 29, considering the country's daily consumption. However, the BPI estimates that the expected volume of red onions harvested until February 28 will reach 17,200 MT, excluding existing stocks in cold storage facilities. These additional harvests are anticipated to last for 41 days, extending to March 7.Despite the projected replenishment from upcoming harvests, Agriculture Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa acknowledged the immediate need for the imports. He explained that while some onion planters have already begun harvesting in early January, the peak harvest season typically falls between January and March. De Mesa noted that the timing of dwindling stocks coincides with the start of the harvest season. Retail prices for red onions have surged, ranging from P110 to P200 per kilo, significantly higher than the P100 to P170 per kilo recorded on January 2, according to the government's latest price monitoring report. Locally grown white onions are priced between P80 to P140 per kilo, while imported white onions are available at P80 to P160 per kilo
