PEZA and BuCor partner to develop sustainable and inclusive economic zone in Puerto Princesa.
The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) is joining forces with the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) to establish what they call 'the first mega ecozone in the country,' covering an expanse of 2,000 hectares in Puerto Princesa, Palawan . This ambitious project, the Palawan Mega Economic Zone (PMEZ), was officially launched on January 24th, with the signing of a memorandum of agreement by PEZA Director General Tereso Panga and BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang.
The initial 2,000 hectares designated for PMEZ will be sourced from the Ihawig Prison and Penal Farm, aiming to drive sustainable and inclusive development. Panga expressed his excitement, stating, 'We look forward to beginning the master planning and immediately start the development of this ecozone which will create more employment opportunities for Filipinos, most especially persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).' PEZA is actively seeking businesses in sectors such as electric vehicle production, advanced manufacturing, green ores processing, artificial intelligence, and medical technologies to establish a presence within PMEZ.Panga emphasized the project's far-reaching impact, stating, 'The impact of this project will be felt all across the region to include an immediate heightened trade within the context of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) international framework.' BuCor Director General Catapang underscored the project's significance, noting that incorporating Palawan into the Luzon Economic Corridor is a core aspect of BuCor's vision. He stressed, 'Palawan is the new frontier, and we want to generate income for social development and food security.' Aligned with PEZA's eco-industrial framework, PMEZ is envisioned to be a clean, green, and technology-driven hub. Both PEZA and BuCor are optimistic about PMEZ becoming operational before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s term concludes in 2028
