The Philippines has temporarily banned the importation of live cattle and buffalo, as well as their products, from Japan due to an outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD). The Department of Agriculture (DA) stated that the ban is crucial for safeguarding the domestic livestock industry from potential risks associated with LSD, a viral disease primarily affecting cattle and often resulting in severe complications or death.
The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) describes LSD as a cattle disease characterized by fever, nodules on the skin, mucous membranes, and internal organs, emaciation, enlarged lymph nodes, skin edema, and even death. The disease can significantly impact the economy by causing temporary reductions in milk production, temporary or permanent sterility in bulls, damage to hides, and occasional death. The import ban encompasses live animals and various products and by-products, including unpasteurized milk and milk products, embryos, skin, and semen used for artificial insemination. Exemptions to the ban include products that meet Philippine import and health standards, such as skeletal muscle meat, casings, gelatin and collagen, tallow, hooves and horns, blood meal and flour, bovine and water buffalo bones and hides, and pasteurized milk. According to the DA, Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries reported the LSD outbreak to the World Organization for Animal Health on November 15, 2024
